Scanning Documents for Electronic Reserve

Before you begin scanning, look through the photocopies that have been dropped off.

Here are some issues that may come up:

  • Poor quality photocopies - Consult with the instructor. He/She may want you to post the documents anyway.
  • Files are very large - consult with the instructor. Very large files do not download easily. Files larger then 4MG cannot be uploaded to eres directly.
  • Copyright issues - faculty are responsible for any copyright issues with their reserve materials. Thom Deardorff is the libraries Copyright Librarian, and faculty can be refered to him for in depth questions.
  • You suspect the course materials have been used before. You can save yourself some scanning by checking the main menu section of eres under documents.

Scanning

Our selected scanner is RICOH IS 760 on the OUGLRESERVE3 computer.

You can adjust the paper size to legal if needed.

Check to see if you need to scan single sided or double sided.

The DPI setting is generally set at 300. (in the middle)

The file naming convention is as follows:

course_prof_title_words

Files for the quarter are stored in the out folder, located here:

c:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat Capture 3.0\Hub\Out

Each document should be rotated and cropped if necessary. A folder should be created for each course, and each document for the course should be organized in a folder.
